Some of the greatest innovators, inventors and engineers in history are thought to have been neurodivergent. Curiosity, creativity, pattern-spotting, problem-solving and deep focus are all strengths that thrive in STEM.
 

At Inventors & Makers, we believe difference is not a deficit — and our sessions are designed so every child can feel included, supported and able to thrive.

Our approach to inclusion

​We are committed to being an inclusive activity provider, working across:​

  • Mainstream schools

  • Specialist schools

  • Resource bases and alternative provisions

  • Nurseries and early years settings

Inclusion is not about every child doing the same thing — it’s about equity, ensuring each child gets the support they need to access and enjoy our sessions.

 

All of our workshops are designed and delivered by qualified teachers who understand children, learning, regulation and behaviour.

Our guiding principles

We design and deliver sessions using the following principles:

  • Neuroaffirming practice: We use language and approaches that recognise individual needs, experiences and strengths — without judgement or shame.
     

  • Behaviour is communication: We understand that behaviour often reflects sensory, emotional or regulatory needs, not “naughtiness”.
     

  • Safety first: Emotional, sensory and physical safety underpin everything we do.
     

  • Flexible participation: Children are supported to engage in ways that work for them — including movement, quiet spaces or alternative approaches.
     

  • Collaboration: We work closely with schools, settings and parents to ensure consistency and understanding.

Experienced, trained teachers

All Inventors & Makers sessions are led by Inventioneer teachers who:

  • Are qualified and experienced teachers

  • Have direct experience working with children with SEND

  • Are Silver SEND Inclusion trained

  • Are familiar with common profiles including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, SEMH and sensory processing differences

  • Follow our Inclusion & SEND Policy in all settings

We regularly deliver sessions in both mainstream and specialist environments, adapting our approach to suit each context.

Our Inclusion & SEND Policy

We have a clear Inclusion and SEND Policy that guides how we plan, deliver, and adapt our sessions. This policy covers:

  • Creating safe and sensory-friendly environments

  • Regulation and emotional support

  • Inclusive communication

  • Adaptive session planning

  • Practical strategies for a wide range of needs

 

Our policy is followed by all franchisees, staff, and contractors. It is available on request for schools and settings.

How we support different needs

While every child is unique, our sessions may include adaptations such as:

  • Visual timetables and clear session structure

  • Low-demand starts and predictable routines

  • Sensory breaks or regulation spaces

  • Flexible seating or movement options

  • Hands-on, practical learning rather than worksheets

  • Clear, calm, step-by-step instructions

  • Reduced sensory overload where possible

  • Alternative ways to take part or observe

 

We plan proactively — and adapt responsively.

Social stories & preparation

We know that preparation reduces anxiety. Where helpful, we can:

  • Share social stories about our sessions in advance

  • Explain what will happen, who will be there, and what
    the environment will be like

  • Support transitions into workshops or clubs

 

These can be shared with children, parents or staff ahead of time.

Working together

We actively encourage communication before sessions.

  • Ask schools or parents what helps a child feel comfortable

  • Check if there are strategies already used successfully

  • Adapt language, pacing or expectations

  • Take feedback and reflect on what worked well
